ake E. Lee is at the top of the list of influential guitarslingers who became heroes of a new generation in the early 1980s. Lee, best known for his fiery guitar work and innovative songwriting, contributed to two of Ozzy Osbourne’s most revered albums, 1983’s “Bark at the Moon” and 1986’s “Ultimate Sin.”
With Ozzy, his post-Ozzy band Badlands, and most recently with his own group Red Dragon Cartel, Lee has infused the athleticism of the ’80s into his playing while remaining firmly rooted in the hard rock foundations of the ’70s. Jake’s tonal choices form the evolutionary glue between the sounds of these two great eras. Jake E Lee and Dave Friedman have combined their legendary ears and talents to develop the new Friedman JEL-50, an amplifier that delivers Lee’s ultimate sounds in a hand-wired boutique package.n Lee’s own words: “This amp combines the two specific tones I use for my sound in one head: the sweetness and warmth of a classic Plexi amp and the more aggressive edge of the master volume amps of the ’80s—all tuned to my taste. Dave has an innate understanding of where I come from as a player, and we’re very similar in the way we hear tones. Dave doesn’t hear things like a technician, but like a musician, and that made it really easy to work with him. I grew up in the ’70s, and those muscular, articulate rock tones were the tones I was always looking for, but I made my name in the ’80s when you needed a little more aggression and a little more dynamics.
The JEL-50 was designed specifically for pedals, especially boosts, ODs, phasers, flangers, tremolos, and wahs. The ultra-transparent, buffered, serial effects loop handles time-based effects pedals and rack units equally well. It’s the same effects path that Friedman uses in all his amplifiers, including the legendary BE-100. The enclosure is finished with beautiful red Tolex and solid Baltic birch.
